The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has deployed 14 units of specialised forces alongside 250 tactical officers to strengthen security operations in Benue State ahead of the Easter celebrations.
The deployment, disclosed by the Benue State Police Command through its Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, in a statement issued in Makurdi, is part of broader efforts to ensure the safety of lives and property during the festive period.
According to the statement, the 14 units were drawn from 16 Police Mobile Force squadrons, while the additional 250 personnel were sourced from specialised tactical teams with expertise in rapid response and high-risk operations. The reinforcements are expected to complement existing personnel already on ground in the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer explained that the strategic deployment is aimed at enhancing ongoing security operations, with particular focus on areas considered vulnerable to criminal activity. These include rural communities, isolated settlements, and key public spaces that often experience increased activity during festive periods.
She added that the deployed officers have been integrated with the Benue State Police Command’s tactical units as well as other security agencies operating in the state. The coordinated approach, she noted, is intended to improve intelligence sharing, strengthen patrol coverage, and ensure a more visible security presence across critical locations.
The reinforcement also signals heightened preparedness by the police authorities to prevent potential security breaches and respond swiftly to any emerging threats during the Easter period, when movement and gatherings typically increase across the country.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Benue State, Ifeanyi Emenari, commended the Inspector-General for the timely intervention, describing the deployment as a proactive step towards strengthening internal security in the state.
Mr Emenari assured residents that the command remains fully committed to maintaining law and order before, during, and after the Easter festivities. He emphasized that security agencies in the state are working in close coordination to ensure a peaceful and safe environment for all residents and visitors.
The Commissioner also called on members of the public to play their part in supporting security efforts by remaining vigilant and law-abiding. He urged citizens to provide timely and useful information to security agencies, stressing that community cooperation is critical in preventing crime and maintaining peace.
He further encouraged residents to report any suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police formation, noting that early reporting can help security agencies act swiftly to avert potential threats.
The deployment underscores the police command’s renewed commitment to proactive policing, especially during periods of heightened social activity, as authorities seek to reassure the public and maintain stability across Benue State.
