Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have arrested a suspected gunrunner, identified as Kelvin Ebikeniye Dugo, in Cross River State.
The arrest was carried out on Monday at Ivara Esu Estate in Odukpani Local Government Area, following actionable intelligence on the suspect’s alleged plan to procure a large cache of ammunition.
Security sources revealed that Dugo was tracked over his attempt to purchase 832 rounds of live ammunition from another suspected gunrunner, Azenda Barnabas, also known as “Jagaban,” who is reportedly based in Aliade, Benue State.
According to the source, DSS operatives intercepted Dugo shortly after he received the consignment, which had been concealed inside food items in a bid to evade detection.
“Recovered were 832 rounds of ammunition and two empty AK-47 magazines,” the source disclosed.
The arrest is part of a broader crackdown by the DSS on illegal arms trafficking and related criminal networks across the country.
“The DSS has intensified its pursuit of such criminals, launching sustained operations across the states of the Federation,” the source added.
“This successful operation is one of many ongoing nationwide efforts, highlighting the DSS’ firm commitment to dismantling gun-running syndicates and curbing illegal arms proliferation.”
Authorities say investigations are ongoing, with efforts underway to apprehend other members of the network and prevent further circulation of illegal weapons.
