The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted and seized 2,437 parcels of suspected cannabis in Ogun State, with a total duty-paid value of N131,598,000.
The Customs Area Comptroller for the state command, Olukayode Afeni, disclosed this on Tuesday during the handover of the seized наркотics to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Idiroko border.
Afeni handed over the items to the NDLEA Commander of the Idiroko Special Area Command, Olaniyi Ekundayo, noting that the seizures were made between January and the present date.
According to him, the large quantity of cannabis was likely intended for consumption by young people, particularly those within the 20 to 21 age bracket in the state.
“I want to urge our parents to admonish their children against the use of drugs because substance abuse does not do any good to the people taking it,” Afeni said.
He emphasized the need for increased parental guidance and community awareness to curb the rising threat of drug abuse among youths.
Receiving the consignment, Ekundayo reaffirmed the NDLEA’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service in tackling drug trafficking, especially through the country’s land borders.
He called on stakeholders to unite in the fight against drug abuse, describing it as a growing societal concern that requires collective action.
Ekundayo added that the seized substances would undergo necessary laboratory analysis to confirm them as cannabis sativa.
He also cautioned young people against involvement in drug use, warning that such habits could have long-term consequences on their future.
The handover underscores ongoing efforts by security agencies to combat the trafficking and abuse of illicit substances across Nigeria.
