The Kano State chapter of the New Nigerian People’s Party has made a fervent public appeal to Governor Abba Yusuf and other prominent figures reportedly planning to defect to the All Progressives Congress, urging them to reconsider their decision.
The state party chairman, Hashimu Dugurawa, in an emotional address to journalists in Kano on Monday, stated that the party’s national leadership and its founding figure, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, were firmly against the move.
“On behalf of the NNPP in Kano State and at the national level… I wish to inform you that we are aware of the developments concerning some individuals who intend to defect to the APC,” Dugurawa said.
“I want to make it clear that the Kano State party, the national party, and our national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, together with other leaders, do not approve of what is happening.”
Dugurawa revealed that the party had exhausted all internal avenues to dissuade the governor and others, but the situation remained unresolved. He then issued a direct, almost pleading call to the would-be defectors.
“Therefore, on behalf of all of us collectively, we once again appeal to them, for the sake of Allah and the Prophet, not to leave this party and not to defect to the party that we have opposed and which the masses and other voters have rejected,” he implored.
He framed the appeal around the party’s responsibility to Kano’s populace, stating that the hope for improving education, agriculture, and commerce in the state rested on a united NNPP. “Our only hope as a party is that they remain in this party in order to help those who are suffering,” Dugurawa added.
The chairman also used the briefing to deny rumours of a rift between Governor Yusuf and Senator Kwankwaso, specifically dismissing allegations that he and other officials were instigating conflict.
“We have never put anyone against our leader; and if anyone has evidence, let them present it,” he challenged.
Concluding his address, Dugurawa advised the public to go about their normal activities and disregard any unauthorised documents. He urged continued support for the NNPP and Senator Kwankwaso to ensure success in future elections.
