Tragedy struck on Monday at a military checkpoint in Lagos State after a mentally unstable man fatally shot a soldier on duty.
The incident occurred in the Agbowa community, along the Ikorodu expressway, where the assailant reportedly seized an AK-47 rifle from one of the soldiers and opened fire, killing him instantly.
A security source confirmed the development, stating, “An insane man snatched a military man’s rifle and shot him dead at a checkpoint. It happened at Adeogun Bridge in Agbowa.”
Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, Abimbola Adebisi, for comments were unsuccessful, as calls were neither picked nor returned.
This tragic event comes amid ongoing security concerns in the country, following reports that a senior Nigerian Army officer and commander, Brigadier General M. Uba, was recently killed by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters along the Damboa–Biu axis in Borno State.
The Brigade Commander had earlier participated in a successful joint air–ground operation against insurgents before he was ambushed. It is believed that his communication after the mission may have unintentionally exposed his location. He was captured alive, interrogated briefly, and later executed by the terrorists.
More details to come as the situation develops.
