Ibadan, 14th May, 2026 — Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election under the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement, marking a major political shift ahead of the next general elections.
Makinde made the declaration during a rally held at Mapo Hall in Ibadan, where supporters and political allies gathered amid growing realignments within the Peoples Democratic Party in Oyo State.
“I, Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, Excellency, announce my candidacy for the position of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the governor declared before cheering supporters.
The announcement comes shortly after Makinde led the Peoples Democratic Party faction aligned with former presidential aspirant Taminu Turaki into a strategic alliance with the APM through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding.
Under the agreement reached between both political groups, candidates loyal to the PDP faction in Oyo State are expected to contest the 2027 governorship, National Assembly and State House of Assembly elections on the platform of the APM instead of the PDP.
The development is expected to reshape the political landscape in Oyo State and potentially trigger wider alignments across the country as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
Political observers say Makinde’s declaration signals a bold move that could deepen existing divisions within the opposition while opening new negotiations among emerging political blocs seeking to challenge the ruling establishment in the next presidential race.
