In a dramatic political reversal, the leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has publicly endorsed the planned mass defection of key party officials in Kano State to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The move signals a major collapse of the NNPP’s structure in its strongest base and follows weeks of internal crisis. Among those set to cross over is the state Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Mr. Kwankwaso’s approval was conveyed in a short video clip posted by his media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, on Tuesday. In it, the former Kano governor stated his endorsement was to allow the officials to exercise their political rights and to ease rising tension within the party’s ranks in the state.
This stance marks a complete U-turn for the NNPP national leader, who had previously condemned the planned defection as a “betrayal” of the electorate that voted them into power under the NNPP banner.
The defection is expected to significantly alter the political landscape of Kano State and reshape opposition dynamics ahead of the next electoral cycle.
