Bauchi – Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has ended negotiations with the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) over a possible defection to the ruling party, bringing the discussions to an abrupt close.
Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bauchi State, Pharm. Sama’ila Adamu Burga, disclosed this to reporters during a press conference in Bauchi on Saturday.
Burga explained that the governor had entered the talks following an invitation from the APC, which requested him and other key political stakeholders — including lawmakers, Assembly members, and local government chairmen from Bauchi State — to join the APC ahead of next year’s general election.
According to the PDP chairman, the move was framed as a step toward dialogue and inclusiveness, with both sides signalling a willingness to explore collaboration in good faith.
However, Burga stated that “after careful and extensive considerations,” the proposals put forward during the negotiations were ultimately not accepted by the APC leadership.
He said the failure to reach a consensus has now brought the entire process to a close.
Our correspondent reports that with the discussions now discontinued, attention has shifted to Governor Mohammed’s next move. The collapse of the talks has opened the door to a range of alternative strategies, including potential alliances or a recalibration of the governor’s current political positioning.
It would be recalled that about three weeks ago, the APC national chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yiltwada, and Kano State governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, visited Governor Mohammed in Bauchi in an attempt to woo him to join the APC.
