The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a shift in the date for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections, moving the polls to Saturday, 16th January 2027.
The Commission disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna.
INEC had originally scheduled the Presidential and National Assembly elections for Saturday, 20th February 2027, with the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections slated for Saturday, 6th March 2027, pursuant to the Electoral Act, 2022.
However, in the new timetable released by the electoral body, the Presidential and National Assembly elections will now take place on 16th January 2027. Consequently, the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections have been moved forward to Saturday, 6th February 2027.
According to the statement, the adjustments were made in compliance with the timelines stipulated in the Electoral Act, though the Commission assured stakeholders that it remains committed to conducting free, fair, and credible elections.
“Details of the revised schedule and other critical timelines will be communicated to political parties and the public in due course,” the statement added.
