The Independent National Electoral Commission has officially declared Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party as the winner of Saturday’s Osun State governorship election
The State Returning Officer, Professor Joshua Ogunwole, who is the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, made the declaration at the INEC collation centre in Osogbo in the early hours of Sunday
Adeleke polled a total of 511,067 votes to defeat his closest rival, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, who secured 444,811 votes, with the margin of victory standing at 66,256 votes
The incumbent governor won in 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas, while the APC candidate clinched 11 local governments
Adeleke recorded particularly wide margins in his strongholds, including Ede North, where he polled 35,427 votes against Oyebamiji’s 10,283, and Ede South, where he secured 26,188 votes compared to 6,219 for the APC
The state capital, Osogbo, gave him 36,480 votes while his challenger managed 30,474
Oyebamiji, however, recorded impressive victories in Irewole with 29,972 votes against Adeleke’s 10,934, and in Olorunda where he polled 24,671 against 23,514
Other LGAs won by the APC included Boripe, Obokun, Irepodun, Ilesa East, and Atakumosa West
Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress finished a distant third with 17,180 votes
The election was largely peaceful, and INEC was able to upload results to its Result Viewing portal in real-time, with over 87 per cent of results uploaded to the IReV platform
A total of 15 political parties participated in the election, though two candidates had earlier withdrawn from the race
Adeleke now secures a second term in office, having first been elected in 2022, and the official declaration brings to an end the collation process which began after voting closed across the state on Saturday
