…Nigeria’s minister to drive $7 billion continent-wide aviation revitalisation plan
The African Development Bank has appointed Nigeria’s Aviation Minister, Festus Keyamo, SAN, as the African Champion for its aviation transformation agenda, tasking the Nigerian minister with driving a $7 billion continent-wide aviation revitalization plan across the continent.
The $7 billion initiative, formally known as the Integrated Aviation Transformation Programme for Africa (IATP), is a continent-wide platform designed to modernize Africa’s aviation ecosystem and mobilize private, institutional, and concessional capital.
The Bank announced the appointment on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, citing Nigeria’s “leadership and vision” in implementing policy reforms to transform its aviation sector as the key reason for Keyamo’s selection.
According to the African Development Bank, African airlines currently account for less than 3 percent of global air traffic despite the continent housing nearly 18 percent of the world’s population.
The IATP aims to reverse this trend by revitalizing the industry and attracting substantial investment into aviation infrastructure, safety, and connectivity across Africa.
The Bank has invited Minister Keyamo to its Annual Meeting scheduled for Thursday, May 28, 2026, in Brazzaville, Congo, where a formal Letter of Intent will be signed between the Bank and Nigeria. In his new role, Keyamo is expected to bring his knowledge, commitment, and passion to drive the program throughout Africa.
