Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has confirmed the emergence of a dangerous new security threat in the region: a Boko Haram splinter group known as ‘Wulowulo.’
Governor Sule raised the alarm during an expanded security council meeting at the Government House on Monday, expressing grave concern that the faction is beginning to surface in the North Central zone. He directed state security forces to take immediate steps to prevent the group from gaining a foothold within Nasarawa’s borders.
“This new group of Wulowulo, which is a splinter group of Boko Haram, is beginning to surface in the North Central zone,” Governor Sule stated. “We need to ensure that we take certain steps not to allow it, at least to come into our state.”
The emergency meeting was convened due to intelligence indicating that criminals from other parts of the country are actively trying to infiltrate the region. The Governor pointed to the “Lakurawa” group, originally based in Kebbi and Sokoto, which has now become a prominent problem in neighbouring Kwanda Stateโa trend he fears could extend to Nasarawa.
Crackdown on Kidnapping and Communal Clashes
Alongside the threat of terrorist infiltration, the Governor addressed a persistent kidnapping crisis that has now become more prominent in Lafia and parts of the Karu Local Government Area. He admitted that past strategies have been insufficient and called for a “new formula” to tackle the menace.
The Governor also condemned a recent violent communal clash in Nindama village, Kokona Local Government Area, which resulted in seven deaths. He directed the Commissioner of Police and the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) to launch an immediate investigation to uncover the root cause of the clash and “nip similar occurrences in the bud.”
A Call for Uncompromising Security
While commending security agencies for their efforts, including the deployment of 120 additional police officers and the NDLEA’s door-to-door operations against drug cartels, Governor Sule urged them to step up their activities.
He issued a firm warning against yielding to pressure from influential individuals seeking the release of arrested suspects, particularly drug kingpins. He further appealed to citizens to stop rushing to bail their wards, insisting that allowing them to face the consequences of their actions would serve as a stronger deterrent.
The Governor concluded by thanking traditional rulers and local government chairmen for their roles in maintaining peace, emphasizing that the meeting was called out of a deep concern for the welfare and security of the state’s people.
