Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially sent the name of Murtala Sule Garo to the State House of Assembly for confirmation as the new deputy governor.
The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, announced the development in a late-night statement on Tuesday. According to the statement, the nomination follows Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution, which allows the governor to fill a vacancy in the deputy governor’s office.
The position became vacant after Comrade Abdussalam Gwarzo resigned on March 27, 2026.
The statement further revealed that Governor Yusuf engaged in extensive consultations with key stakeholders before requesting the Assembly to approve Garo’s nomination.
At 48, Garo brings over two decades of political and administrative experience to the role. He has served as State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the Governor, and Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area.
His resume also includes chairmanship of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State, as well as a stint as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. Notably, during the 2023 general election, he was the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State.
