The Bauchi State Government has approved the immediate lifting of the suspension of commercial activities in selected cattle markets across Alkaleri, Bauchi, Kirfi and Tafawa Balewa Local Government Areas to facilitate the purchase of sacrificial animals ahead of the forthcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
The approval was granted by Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed following consultations with security agencies and relevant stakeholders, according to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado.
The government said the temporary reopening of the markets was necessitated by their strategic role in livestock trading and the need to ensure residents have adequate access to livestock required for the Islamic festival.
According to the statement, the lifting of the suspension will remain in effect for a period of two weeks.
The state government assured residents that security agencies, in collaboration with local authorities and traditional leaders, would closely monitor activities in the affected markets to maintain law and order and ensure peaceful operations throughout the period.
Governor Mohammed expressed confidence that the arrangement would ease access to livestock for citizens while preserving security across the affected communities.
The directive takes immediate effect.
