A new women-led water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programme has begun in Bauchi State, aiming to provide communities with access to clean water.
The programme is run by the Chongsquare Women and Children Development Foundation (CWCDF) alongside the Development Exchange Centre (DEC). It is funded by the Small-Scale Project Fund (SSPF) with support from Brot fรผr die Welt (Bread for the World).
The six-month initiative directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which aims to ensure everyone has access to clean water and sanitation.
To launch the project, the group carried out a three-day advocacy visit. They met with the Bauchi State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) and traditional leaders from the Miri and Sohon Kampani communities.
The project will focus on repairing hand pump boreholes, training local WASH Committees (WASHCOMs), and supporting Local Area Mechanics with toolkits and training to ensure the repairs are sustainable.
Stakeholders welcomed the programme and pledged their commitment to partner with the organisations to achieve its goals.
CWCDF stated that by empowering women to lead these efforts, the project also advances gender equality (SDG 5) and improves overall community health and resilience.
