Army Enhances Troops’ Welfare, Boosts Morale in North-East Anti-Insurgency Operations

The Nigerian Army has intensified efforts to improve the welfare, morale and operational effectiveness of troops deployed in the North-East, as part of its sustained campaign against insurgents operating in the region, including Boko Haram.

This was disclosed on Friday in Maiduguri by the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, Abdulsalam Abubakar, who outlined a series of reforms introduced to enhance the well-being and performance of personnel on the front lines.

Abubakar said the new measures reflect a deliberate shift in military leadership strategy, placing greater emphasis on the human element of warfare — ensuring that soldiers are not only equipped for combat but are also adequately supported in terms of welfare, recognition and career development.

At the core of the reforms is a significant upward review of troop allowances, which have been increased from N20,000 to N50,000 across all ranks, from privates to warrant officers.

According to the theatre commander, the increment is a clear acknowledgment of the sacrifices made by troops engaged in the protracted counter-insurgency campaign in the North-East.

He noted that the development aligns with the ‘Soldier First’ doctrine of the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, a policy framework that prioritises the welfare, dignity and professional growth of Nigerian soldiers.

“This is not just a financial adjustment; it is a statement of intent that the well-being of our troops remains central to operational success,” he said.

Beyond financial incentives, the Nigerian Army is also expanding opportunities for troops serving in the theatre to benefit from international exposure through foreign training programmes and peacekeeping missions.

Abubakar revealed that preparations are underway for the deployment of three separate batches of soldiers for overseas assignments, with priority given to those who have served in high-risk operational environments in the North-East.

The move, he explained, is designed to reward dedication while also equipping personnel with global best practices that can be reintegrated into local operations.

“This approach ensures that our soldiers are not only recognised for their sacrifices but are also given opportunities to grow professionally and contribute more effectively to national security,” he added.

In a further push to enhance morale, the army has introduced performance-based recognition for outstanding officers, particularly at the senior level.

Abubakar noted that this initiative is aimed at fostering a culture of excellence, accountability and professionalism within the ranks, while also motivating leaders to maintain high operational standards in challenging environments.

He further explained that the Nigerian Army has sustained its welfare flight operations to facilitate faster and safer troop rotations, reducing the time soldiers spend away from their families while also minimising the risks associated with long-distance road travel in volatile regions.

On operational readiness, Abubakar disclosed that the Chief of Army Staff has approved the introduction of quick-intervention funds for commanding officers in the field, enabling immediate repair and maintenance of critical equipment without bureaucratic delays.

The theatre commander also highlighted improvements in troop feeding, stating that food committees managed by soldiers have been established across various operational locations.

He noted that the initiative allows personnel to choose their meals, thereby improving nutrition, satisfaction and overall welfare in the theatre of operations.

The comprehensive welfare reforms come at a critical time in Nigeria’s counter-insurgency efforts, as the military continues to confront evolving threats in the North-East.

Analysts say that beyond weapons and intelligence, the success of such operations often hinges on the morale, motivation and well-being of the troops on the ground.

By prioritising welfare alongside combat readiness, the Nigerian Army appears to be adopting a more holistic approach to military operations — one that recognises that a well-supported soldier is a more effective soldier.

As Operation Hadin Kai continues its mandate, the long-term impact of these reforms will likely be measured not only in battlefield outcomes but also in troop retention, discipline and overall institutional strength.

For now, the message from the military leadership is clear: the fight against insurgency is not only about defeating the enemy, but also about taking care of those who are on the front lines.
