The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced it will ratify the incumbent, Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, as its consensus candidate for the 2026 Ekiti State governorship election.
This decision followed a significant shift in the party’s primary election plans, moving from a direct primary to a consensus mode.
The change was prompted by the voluntary withdrawal of the only other cleared aspirant, Mrs. Atinuke Oluremi Omolayo
In a formal letter to the party, Mrs Omolayo conveyed her decision to step aside and endorse Governor Oyebanji. She expressed her full support for the consensus arrangement and any other process adopted by the party in accordance with the Electoral Act of 2022 and the APC’s constitution.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the party confirmed it has formally notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of this development via a letter dated 13th October 2025.
The APC stated that having met the requirements for a consensus candidacy as outlined in Sections 84(9) and (11) of the Electoral Act, it has approved a revised timetable for the nomination process.
This schedule includes a Delegate Congress on 25th October, an Appeal on 26th October, and a Special Nomination Congress to formally ratify the consensus candidate on 27th October 2025.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, commended Mrs. Omolayo for her sportsmanship and commitment to party unity. The APC has urged all its leaders, members, and stakeholders in Ekiti State to remain united and work towards securing victory for the party in the June 2026 governorship election.
