The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State has publicly raised an alarm over an alleged plot to attack the party’s National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda.
In a statement issued by the party’s Acting Publicity Secretary, Shittu Bamaiyi, the APC said it had uncovered plans to assault the National Chairman on Sunday during the Gindiri Old Students’ Reunion Service. The event is scheduled to be held in Gindiri town, located in the Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The party alleged that the sponsors of the planned attack have mobilised thugs to carry out the assault. “Already sponsors of the alleged attack are said to be meeting today in a private residence in Jos to put finishing touches on the wicked plan,” the statement said.
It provided further details on the alleged arrangements, noting, “As part of the plan, three buses have been allegedly earmarked for each of the 20 electoral wards in Mangu local government area to convey thugs to Gindiri Missionary Compound, venue of the Reunion service, in order to embarrass the National Chairman and his entourage.”
The party’s statement also described additional tactics intended to create a scene. “According to unconfirmed reports, thugs will also be stationed at the Gindiri roundabout in Mangu, where they will be shouting ‘Ba ma so, Ba ma so’, immediately Nentawe enters the town.”
Furthermore, the APC claimed that efforts would be made to shape public perception of the event. “Furthermore, the Press from within and outside Plateau State will be fully mobilised to create the impression that people of Plateau State despise the National Chairman,” the statement from Mr Bamaiyi added.
In response to these allegations, the party is seeking official intervention. “In view of this unhealthy development, APC, as a law abiding political party, is urgently requesting security agencies to investigate the matter to forestall any breakdown of law and order,” the statement read.
Appealing directly to its supporters, the party also urged calm. “The Party is also appealing to its teeming supporters to remain calm and law abiding,” Shittu added.
