Former Bauchi State Governor, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the 2027 general election after winning the partyโs primary election in the state.
The result was announced in the early hours of Saturday by the APC Governorship Primary Election Committee chaired by retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, John Bassey Abang.
According to the committee, the primary election was conducted across the state on Friday, with votes collated from the various local government areas before the final declaration of results.
Announcing the outcome, Abang said Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar secured 57,517 votes to defeat six other aspirants and emerge the partyโs standard-bearer for the 2027 governorship race.
The committee disclosed that former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, came second with 26,001 votes, while Nura Manu Soro polled 13,638 votes.
Other contenders included Bala Maijamaโa Wunti, who scored 13,648 votes, Kabir Baba Maโaji with 8,157 votes, Baba Abubakar Suleiman who garnered 7,688 votes, and Yakubu Yakubu Abdullahi, who received 7,181 votes.
Declaring the winner, the committee chairman stated that Abubakar, having secured the highest number of valid votes cast, was duly returned as the APC governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Bauchi State.
The committee also released the results of the partyโs State House of Assembly primaries, which were conducted earlier in the week.
Abubakar previously served as governor of Bauchi State from 2015 to 2019 under the APC platform. His victory in the primary positions him to lead the party into the 2027 governorship contest as he seeks a return to the Government House.
The primary election was preceded by concerns raised by some aspirants over the conduct of the process, with supporters of certain contestants staging peaceful protests and demanding a transparent exercise.
As of the time of filing this report, none of the unsuccessful aspirants had publicly reacted to the outcome of the primary election.
