After being expelled from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) two months ago, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa, has officially joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), in a move that had been widely anticipated.
The lawmaker, who represents the Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency in Kano State, announced his defection on Monday, 10th November 2025, via his verified social media accounts. His departure from the NNPP follows his expulsion from the party in September over allegations of anti-party activities and failure to pay membership dues.
Announcing his decision, Jibrin stated that he and his supporters had resolved to leave the NNPP and its associated Kwankwasiyya movement, and pledged their support for President Bola Tinubu’s anticipated re-election campaign in 2027.
โToday, in a show of solidarity, I was warmly received by thousands of my constituents in my hometown of Kofa, Bebeji, Kano,โ Jibrin wrote. โThe gathering resolved to leave the NNPP/Kwankwasiyya, join the APC, and endorse President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office.โ
He added that the event also had a spiritual dimension, noting, โabout 2,000 Islamic clerics from my constituency offered special prayers for President Tinubu, as well as for peace and development in Kiru/Bebeji, Kano State, and Nigeria at large.โ
In a video shared from the event, the fourth-term lawmaker provided his rationale for the move, explaining that he was defecting to the APC alongside his supporters to correct what he described as a past error.
Addressing the crowd, he said, โI decided to bring this crowd to correct my earlier mistake. I donโt want anyone to say I donโt have supporters.โ
His defection had been the subject of political speculation for weeks, fuelled by his known close relationship with President Bola Tinubu. The move is seen as a significant boost for the APC’s political influence in Kano State, a key political battleground in northern Nigeria.
