The national leadership of the Labour Party (LP) under Barrister Julius Abure has dramatically reclaimed its party headquarters in Utako, Abuja, hours after the complex was seized in a pre-dawn raid by a rival faction.
The secretariat was illegally occupied early Tuesday by individuals loyal to Senator Nenadi Usman, who were aided by the Abia State Deputy Governor and a significant contingent of security forces.
The group reportedly used eight trucks of policemen to forcibly gain entry, breaking security doors to access the offices of the National Chairman and the National Secretary.
Witnesses described a scene of chaos as thugs pulled down party billboards and carted away valuables and sensitive documents. The invading faction later addressed a press conference from the premises, claiming control.
However, in a swift reversal, the operation was declared illegal and unauthorized by relevant authorities. By midday Tuesday, the Abure-led executive had successfully re-entered the building and restored its lawful control.
In a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the LP condemned the act as “a brazen and criminal invasion.”
“The party will take inventory of the losses and outright theft that are observed resulting from the illegal invasion, after which a formal charge will be pressed,” the statement read. It highlighted the theft of confidential party documents as a particular concern.
The party assured members and the public that normal activities would resume at the Utako headquarters on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, and apologized for any inconvenience caused by the “temporal hiccup.”
Issuing a stern warning, the statement added, “The party will no longer tolerate further attempts by some desperate politicians to impugn on the lawful activities of the party.” It also advised any other groups claiming leadership to await the final determinations of ongoing cases in the nationโs appellate courts.
