Former Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, has expressed strong confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will secure significant and surprising support from the South East in the 2027 presidential elections. In an interview with ARISE NEWS on Wednesday, Shittu insisted that the influence of Labour Party’s Peter Obi would not hinder Tinubu’s performance in the region.
Shittu stated, “And today, if you know the amount of votes that will be coming from even the South East for APC, you’ll be shocked.” He attributed this anticipated shift to the efforts of prominent political figures including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Minister of Works Dave Umahi, who he said are persuading voters in the region to support the ruling party.
“Even the people from the South East, with the efforts of people like Dave Umahi and the Senate President and so many others, a lot of people are getting convinced to come the Tinubu route,” Shittu explained.
When questioned about whether Peter Obi remains a significant factor in the South East, Shittu was dismissive. “It doesn’t matter,” he declared. “What is important is for him [Tinubu] to win. Even if to win by 10 votes, I can assure you that Bola Ahmed Tinubu is going to win.”
While acknowledging the current economic difficulties facing Nigerians, including high fuel prices and the depreciation of the naira, Shittu maintained that these were the result of long-term mismanagement. He expressed belief that President Tinubu’s policies would ultimately prove beneficial.
“Nigerians are not finding it easy. But I want to say this with authority and sincerity: a lot of the initiatives of Tinubu now, Nigerians will come to thank him sooner than later,” he said.
