The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced a major rebranding and restructuring plan for the Labour Party (LP) as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajero, declared the enforcement of resolutions reached by the NLC National Executive Council (NEC) to implement the terms of a settlement agreement with immediate effect. The NLC, as the owner of the Labour Party, has resolved to conduct an All-Inclusive and Expansive National Convention in 2025, alongside other strategic measures aimed at revitalizing the party.
The rebranding strategy is based on the terms of a settlement brokered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on April 26, 2022, and executed between the NLC and LP on June 27, 2022.
Key aspects of the plan include the composition of the Labour Party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), with Comrade S.O.Z Ejiofor appointed as the new BoT Chairman. The party will also conduct congresses at the ward, local government, and state levels, culminating in a national convention in 2025. These congresses will elect substantive party structures nationwide and ensure grassroots participation.
Additionally, the NLC has launched an intensive membership drive with the goal of mobilizing ten million Nigerians to join the Labour Party. This initiative aims to strengthen the party’s base and make it more representative of the Nigerian populace. To foster unity and focus on the rebranding efforts, all pending court cases related to internal disputes within the party will be discontinued.
The rebranding initiative marks a new chapter for the Labour Party, with the NLC playing a central role in repositioning it as a formidable political force.
Comrade Engr. Dr. Eragbe Anslem Aphimia, former National Youth Leader of the Labour Party and a key figure in the NLC Political Commission, emphasised the importance of unity and collective effort in achieving the party’s goals. He stated, “This is a new dawn for the Labour Party. We are committed to building a party that truly represents the interests of the Nigerian people. Forward ever, backward never”
