The Presidency has condemned Peter Obi, the 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), over his recent comments suggesting he may not be alive to contest the election.
The government described his claims as a “fabricated narrative” peddled by a “serial liar.”
Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, issued the statement on Wednesday in response to Mr Obi’s interview on the With Chude podcast.
Mr Obi had alleged that the government was frustrating his activities and targeting opposition figures. He cited an incident at an airport where officials locked his vehicle, and claimed that associates now avoid public association with him for fear of government reprisal.
The Presidency rejected these allegations, describing them as a “fabricated narrative” designed to attract sympathy. According to the government, the airport incident likely resulted from a violation of parking regulations rather than state-sponsored action.
Mr Onanuga characterised the former Anambra governor as a “serial liar” who exaggerates personal inconveniences into political allegations. The presidential aide also questioned Obi’s credibility based on his political history, pointing to his pledges of loyalty to APGA before later abandoning the party.
“By his own actions, Peter Obi has shown that his word cannot be trusted. His promises are as fleeting as his political allegiances,” Onanuga wrote on X.
The Presidency also seized on Mr Obi’s pledge to serve only one term if elected. Onanuga wrote: “If you believe Peter Obi’s promise to serve only one term as president, you’ll believe anything”.
Mr Onanuga maintained that President Tinubu’s administration remains focused on its reform agenda and has no interest in responding to what it described as self-serving narratives.
