A breakout of political tension has pitted the Rivers State House of Assembly members against Governor Siminalayi Fubara in a renewed movie to impeach the governor, making the fourth time since the political crisis in the state emanated.
Now, this plot came amid the prolonged power struggle following the evolving power dynamics that has placed a higher authority of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) on the hands of Governor Fubara, making lawmakers loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike palpably jittery about their reelection bid.
Spear News observed that the ongoing impeachment plot has continued to create uncertainty within the state’s leadership structure, keeping residents, political watchers and participants on edge.
Top insider sources close to the Assembly claim that discussions regarding impeachment proceedings intensified after a renewed disagreements between both camps over control of the APC structures and governance decisions in the state, particularly as the hazy situation concerning the selection of candidates for the 2027 general polls became apparent.
While official details of the alleged impeachment plot remain sketchy, the move has already sparked reactions across the political environment.
Spear News recalls that this is not the first time Governor Fubara has faced impeachment threats since assuming office in 2023, his administration has repeatedly clashed with lawmakers, leading to several failed attempts to remove him from office.
The crisis has even resulted in court cases, public protests, and interventions from political stakeholders across Nigeria.
Political analysts believe the renewed impeachment moves could further deepen instability in the state if not properly managed.
Many residents, reliable sources disclosed are now calling for peace and dialogue to prevent the situation from escalating into a larger constitutional crisis.
At the time of filing this report, neither the Rivers State Government nor the leadership of the House of Assembly had released an official statement confirming the impeachment plans.
