There is an old saying in the tropics that death comes in a buzz. For most of us in Southern Nigeria, the mosquito is as much a part of life as sunlight. It is the uninvited guest at every dinner, the lullaby buzzing in your ear as you try to sleep, and the silent carrier of sickness.
So, when I tell people that I have been visiting a community since 2022, sometimes for three months at a stretch, sometimes for as little as five days, and I have scarcely seen a mosquito, they assume I am exaggerating. Then I tell them to visit Isouchi, a quiet enclave in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State.
I first came in 2022, expecting the usual Nigerian evening ritual: the slap, the spray, the whine. I knew what life in Nigeria had taught me, that mosquitoes are simply part of the air. You accept them. You deal with them. That is just how it is. But something strange happened. The first evening came and went. No buzz. The second evening. Nothing. By the third day, it dawned on me that I had not thought about mosquitoes once.
I had expected to eventually reach for some preventive measure – a net, a coil, a spray, anything. But I quickly realised there was no need for any of it.
Now, after three years of coming and going, I can count the number of mosquitoes I have seen on one hand. No malaria. No nuisance. No preventive measures required. The air in Nsouchi is clean, still, and notably free of the high-pitched whine that characterises most Nigerian evenings. But why? What is hiding in the soil of Umunneochi?
To understand this, you have to look at the ground beneath your feet. A search into the geology of the Umunneochi region reveals a fascinating reality. Unlike the swampy riverine areas of the Niger Delta or the stagnant water basins found in other parts of Abia State, Nsouchi sits on specific terrain: laterite and quarry-rich soil.
Umunneochi LGA, which houses Isouchi, is known for two things: agriculture and solid mineral mining. The area is rich in granite, quorite, and laterite. These materials are not just good for building roads; they fundamentally affect water retention.
Mosquitoes need one thing to survive: stagnant water. Even a tiny pool in a bottle cap is enough for breeding. However, the loose, porous, and rocky soil composition of Nsouchi acts like a sieve. Rainwater does not pool on the surface long enough for larvae to mature. It drains almost immediately into the earth.
Furthermore, Umunneochi is historically a highland area. It sits in the transition zone between the Imo River basin and the Cross River basin. The topography is not flat. It is rolling hills, slopes, and valleys. Nsouchi shares this terrain.
The absence of flat, marshy plains means there are no natural reservoirs of still water. The wind patterns in the highlands also keep the air moving, making it difficult for the slow-flying mosquito to navigate or settle. While the rest of Abia State battles with fumigation and treated nets, the people of Nsouchi have an environmental buffer built into their geography.
Walking through the community, the difference is palpable. Children play outside until dusk without the welts of bites on their legs. Conversations on the porch are uninterrupted. I have slept with my windows wide open on every single trip since 2022.
Coming from the city, I expected that sooner or later I would need to do something about mosquitoes. That is just what life in Nigeria has trained you to expect. But within days of my first visit, I realised there was nothing to do. I have not taken malaria treatment since I started coming here. Coincidence? I doubt it.
What the Health Records Show
This absence of mosquitoes is not just a matter of my comfort. It writes itself into the medical records of the community. A look at the health reports from local clinics and primary health centres in Nsouchi reveals something striking: inhabitants here hardly ever catch malaria. When a case does appear, health professionals have learned to ask a specific set of questions. Was the patient recently travelling? Did they visit a neighbouring town or go down to the city? In nearly every instance, the infection is traced to somewhere else – a trip to Umuahia, a market visit to a lowland community, or time spent with relatives in a swampier region.
What makes this even more telling is when a malaria case cannot be explained by travel. Those rare instances become medical curiosities. Health workers note them down carefully because they are the exception, not the rule. If a resident falls ill with no history of leaving Nsouchi, it raises eyebrows. Something strange would have had to happen – a pocket of water that lingered longer than usual, perhaps, or an unusual weather pattern. But those moments are few. The baseline is health.
For me, a regular visitor from the city, this is almost difficult to believe. I grew up assuming that malaria is simply the cost of living in Nigeria. Yet here is a community where malaria is the stranger, not the resident. The mosquito does not live here. And the health records prove it.
A Model for Prevention?
As Nigeria continues to fight malaria, the story of Nsouchi offers a silent lesson in environmental management. While we cannot rearrange the geography of the entire country, the principle remains the same: eliminate stagnant water, and you eliminate the mosquito. Nsouchi does not need fumigation. It does not need treated nets. It simply has the right soil and the right height.
For now, Nsouchi remains a quiet haven in Abia State – a place where the evenings are for stars and conversation, not for swatting and itching. I will keep returning. I have been coming since 2022. After three years, I no longer give mosquitoes a single thought when I visit this place. There is simply no need.
If you are tired of the buzz, you now know where to find the silence. And if you ever fall ill there, the nurses will likely ask you one question first: “Where did you travel to recently?”
