President Bola Tinubu has promised Nigeria’s triumphant Super Falcons a grand national celebration following their dramatic 3-2 comeback victory in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final against host nation Morocco.
In an emotional video call with the team moments after their record-extending 10th continental title.
The President declared: “I am very, very proud of you. The entire nation is proud of you. You have lifted our spirits. You are a pride to your generation and we are all very happy.”
The President specifically praised tournament MVP Rasheedat Ajibade and match-winner Esther Okoronkwo, whose 64th-minute penalty sparked Nigeria’s comeback. “That was very courageous,” Tinubu said of Okoronkwo’s crucial spot-kick.
“You will be celebrated,” the President emphatically told the jubilant squad, “and I congratulate all the coaches and management of the team, including the ministers and the officials.” His promise was met with resounding cheers and chants of “Thank you, Mr. President!” from the players.
Ajibade, who received both the Woman of the Tournament and Golden Boot awards, responded on behalf of the team: “We are grateful for your support Mr. President, especially for ensuring all our allowances were paid. We can’t wait to present this trophy to you in Abuja.”
The historic conversation concluded with a rousing rendition of Nigeria’s national anthem and three thunderous “Gbosa!” cheers led by the players.
President Tinubu’s final words captured the nation’s mood: “Safe journey home, enjoy yourselves, avoid injuries, God bless you.”
The Super Falcons are expected to arrive in Abuja on Monday with the WAFCON trophy, where they will be received by the President for a formal victory parade and state honours.
