The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that Governor Siminalayi Fubara is now fully in charge of the government in Rivers State.
This statement comes as Governor Fubara resumes his duties following a six-month period of emergency rule imposed by President Bola Tinubu.
The emergency rule was declared in March after a prolonged political crisis between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Wike. Many observers believed the dispute was partly due to Wikeās alleged attempts to impose his own political appointees on the governor.
However, speaking on Channels Televisionās Politics Today on Thursday, Wike vowed to give the governor a completely free hand to manage the affairs of the oil-rich South-South state. He firmly stated that he has no intention of recommending any commissioners to Fubara.
āI cannot go and impose anything on the governor. Why would I impose anything on the governor?ā Wike said. āAssuming I go to the governor and say, āI want this,ā will the state collapse? I will not (suggest commissioners for the governor) I have no candidate, and I will not.ā
This pledge is seen as a significant step towards lasting peace in the state, with Wike confirming that the governor now has full control.
