President Bola Tinubu has vowed that his administration will honour the late President Muhammadu Buhari by sustaining his core legacies of discipline, integrity, and the principle that public office is a trust.
In a firm commitment to continuity and honour, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday pledged that his government would uphold and advance the defining principles of his predecessor, the late President Muhammadu Buhari.
The President made the declaration at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja during the public presentation of the biography, From Soldier to Statesman – The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, authored by Dr. Charles Omole.
“This book reinforces the public memory. It outlines achievements and flaws, as all honest histories should. It should motivate future leaders to learn lessons rather than repeat slogans,” President Tinubu stated, addressing a gathering that included state governors, former service chiefs, and members of the Buhari family.
He positioned the act of sustaining Buhari’s work as the highest form of tribute. “The greatest honour to bestow on the late President is to sustain his legacies… That is my duty, and I pledge that today,” the President affirmed.
Reflecting on their long political partnership, President Tinubu described Buhari as a “brother, friend, and political partner” with whom he navigated Nigeria’s complex political terrain. He highlighted the historic 2015 coalition that unseated an incumbent president, a feat he said reshaped the nation’s democracy.
“Our political journey together taught me that cooperation across differences is not weakness; it is wisdom. Nation-building demands that we compete passionately and govern responsibly. President Buhari understood that the contest ends when the oath begins,” Tinubu said, urging that politics remain honourable and governance focused on results.
The event served as a platform for key figures from the Buhari administration to attest to his character. The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), recounted Buhari’s discipline and encouragement of subordinates. “The man whose legacy we celebrate today was a man of honour, a man of character, a man of integrity and a man of principle,” Marwa stated.
Former security chiefs offered uniform praise for Buhari’s leadership style. The immediate-past Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Isiaka Amao, noted that Buhari was “not merely a Commander-in-Chief issuing orders but a statesman who understood that military power must always serve democratic governance.”
Similarly, the former Director-General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Magaji Bichi, commended President Tinubu for continuing Buhari’s commitment to democratic tenets, adding pointedly, “President Buhari will never rig an election.”
In a message of gratitude on behalf of the family, Hadiza Nana Buhari thanked President Tinubu for his steadfast support, specifically acknowledging his dedication to completing the National Armed Forces PTSD Centre Project, an initiative started by her father. She urged Nigerians to learn from Buhari’s legacy of patience and integrity.
The high-profile event was attended by The Gambia’s President Adama Barrow, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, several state governors, the Sultan of Sokoto, the Olu of Warri, and numerous former aides and associates of the late president.
