Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, is elated over the defeat of the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco by the Super Falcons of Nigeria during Saturday’s final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
His Media Adviser, Ismail Mudashir, said in a statement in Abuja on Sunday that Barau described the team’s victory as a testament to their resilience, talent and unyielding national spirit.
The Nigerian women had beaten the Lionesses 3-2 in a pulsating final match of the 13th WAFCON, decided at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.
The victory earned Nigeria the 10th title in the championship in a campaign the Falcons tagged ‘Mission X.’
” I congratulate the Super Falcons and indeed all Nigerians on our team’s historic victory at the 2025 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament.
” This victory is a testament to our players’ resilience, talent and unyielding national spirit. This is a moment of immense pride and celebration for our nation,” the DSP was quoted as saying.
Jibrin, who is the founder of the Barau Football Club, which recently secured promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) following an impressive performance in the Nigeria National League (NNL) Super 8 playoffs, observed that the Nigerian team had again proven that the country “remains dominant in African women’s football.”
“The team’s determination, discipline, and passion throughout the tournament are commendable. It inspires a new generation of Nigerian girls to believe in the power of their dreams.
” Kudos to the coaching crew, the Nigerian Football Federation, and all stakeholders who contributed to the team’s success.”
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) also congratulated the team in separate messages.
“We extend our heartfelt congratulation to Nigeria’s Super Falcons for their triumphant victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), securing a record-extending 10th continental title with a thrilling 3-2 comeback win over host nation Morocco last night, July 26, 2025.
“We celebrate the Super Falcons’ remarkable resilience, teamwork, and unyielding determination, which shone brightly in their dramatic second-half revival to clinch the title.
“This victory reaffirms Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football and serves as a powerful testament to the strength, talent, and spirit of Nigerian women.
“We are immensely proud of our Super Falcons for this monumental achievement. Their extraordinary performance, overcoming a two-goal deficit against a formidable Moroccan side in front of a passionate home crowd, embodies the indomitable Nigerian spirit”, the PDP said.
On her part, the LP’s Interim National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, noted that the victory “is a testament to the resilience, courage, and indomitable spirit that defines Nigerians both at home and across the diaspora.”
Usman said the win brought a much-needed ray of hope and inspiration to Nigerians “a time when the nation is weighed down by hardship, hopelessness, and a deluge of disheartening headlines.”
According to the LP, “It is our firm belief that this win is more than just a sporting feat – it is a symbolic reminder of what is possible when determination meets purpose.
“May this moment of national pride herald the beginning of a new chapter of glory and resurgence in our country’s collective journey, despite the suffering and setbacks caused by failed leadership.”
