A coalition of eminent Nigerian leaders has launched a major campaign for comprehensive electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.
A spokesperson for the NCFront, Mallam Hamisu San Turaki, confirmed the developments in a press statement issued on Sunday.
The statement outlined that this new push is a direct response to the widespread demand for a more transparent and credible electoral process in the country, setting the stage for a major national debate on the future of Nigeriaโs democracy.
Prominent figures including economist Prof Pat Utomi, former electoral chairman Prof Attahiru Jega, human rights lawyer Barr Femi Falana, and Nigerian Labour Congress President Comrade Joe Ajaero are uniting to drive the initiative.
The decision was the high point of a leadership consultative meeting hosted by the National Consultative Front (NCFront) in Lagos at the weekend.
The move follows resolutions on the urgent need for electoral reforms made at the recent National Constitutional Summit organised by The Patriots and the Nigeria Political Summit Group.
The coalition, which includes the NCFront and the Labour and Civil Society Front (LCSF), will officially launch a mass movement during a National Dialogue on Electoral Reform scheduled for October 1st, 2025. The event aims to mobilise Nigerians both at home and abroad to demand critical changes to the countryโs electoral framework.
The campaign will focus on key issues that marred the credibility of the 2023 elections, such as compulsory electronic transmission of results, effective criminalisation of vote buying, and the enactment of early and diaspora voting laws. The group will also advocate for proportional representation in government, including special seats for women and other vulnerable groups.
To structure the campaign, the initiators will launch a new platform known as the Alliance for Defence of Democracy (ADD) on October 1st. It is envisioned as a popular alternative movement to coordinate the mobilisation process for these critical reforms. The Nigerian Labour Congress President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, is slated to be among the key leaders addressing the national gathering.
The coalition boasts a formidable roster of supporters deemed competent to champion the intervention. Alongside Utomi, Jega, Falana, and Ajaero, other notable leaders involved include Dr Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, Dr Oby Ezekwesili, Dr Hakeem Baba Ahmed, Prof Kingsley Moghalu, Engr Buba Galadima, and Prof Chidi Odinkalu, among many others described as “leaders of conscience committed to urgent electoral reforms in Nigeria.”
