…as IGP Egbetokun urges police officers to emulate his spirit of sacrifice

The Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), has honoured Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Adedeji Akeem, Force Procurement Officer, for his exceptional commitment to nation-building through voluntary academic service.
The recognition ceremony, held at the Sultan Maccido Institute for Leadership, Peace and Development on the university campus, brought together scholars, security experts, and students to celebrate individuals who have contributed significantly to leadership and societal advancement. DCP Akeem was singled out for his unwavering dedication, having delivered lectures at the Institute consistently for the past five years without collecting any form of remuneration.
Delivering his remarks, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Mathew Adamu, applauded the rare gesture, describing it as “a powerful lesson in patriotism and sacrifice.” According to him, “giving back to society in intangible but invaluable ways must be recognized and celebrated. What DCP Akeem has done cannot be measured in monetary terms, because knowledge transfer is priceless, and its impact endures across generations.”
Professor Adamu added that Akeem’s commitment demonstrates how individuals in public service can extend their influence beyond their official duties by investing in education and human capital development. “This is a model we would love to see replicated across all sectors in Nigeria,” he said.
Responding to the honour, DCP Akeem expressed deep gratitude to the University authorities for the recognition. He reaffirmed his personal philosophy of service to humanity and stressed that education remains one of the strongest tools for social transformation. He said:
“For me, contributing knowledge freely to young people is not a burden but a duty. The future of our country rests in their hands, and any investment in their intellectual growth is an investment in national stability and progress.”
To further support the University’s academic development, DCP Akeem donated copies of books he authored to the institution, pledging continued collaboration in areas of leadership and peace studies.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, commended Akeem for his exemplary sacrifice. In a statement issued from Force Headquarters, Abuja, the IGP noted that the recognition is a reflection of the officer’s commitment not only to the Nigeria Police Force but also to the Nigerian society at large.
The IGP urged other officers and men of the Force to emulate DCP Akeem’s shining example by embracing professionalism, discipline, and excellence in their duties. “The Nigeria Police Force is proud to have men and women whose service transcends the call of duty. Officers like DCP Akeem remind us that true policing is not only about enforcing the law but also about uplifting society,” he said.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, further emphasized in the statement that the police leadership remains committed to fostering a culture of excellence and community service within the Force, highlighting that recognitions such as this reinforce the value of integrity and selflessness in nation-building.
The event ended with wide commendations from students, faculty members, and community leaders in attendance, many of whom described Akeem’s contributions as a beacon of hope in a time when acts of volunteerism are increasingly rare. His recognition, they noted, underscores the importance of partnerships between security agencies and educational institutions in strengthening societal values and advancing peace and leadership development.
