Court documents filed in the United States have revealed that Karl Von Batten, the Washington-based lobbyist hired by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, was sentenced to 180 days in jail over a domestic assault against his then-girlfriend in 2003.
The records, obtained from the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, show that Von Batten — identified in the court filings as “Karl M.E. Okeke” — was sentenced on December 10, 2003, following a misdemeanor bench trial for the July 4, 2003 assault.
The jail time was suspended, and Von Batten was placed on one year of probation. He was also ordered to stay away from the victim, complete fifty hours of community service, participate in a domestic violence counselling programme, and make a contribution to the Crime Victim’s Compensation Fund.
How the Assault Happened
According to the court’s narration, Von Batten and Cynthia D. Murphy began a romantic relationship in April 2003. The relationship later turned sour.
On July 4, 2003, Von Batten invited Murphy to a party at his apartment, where they consumed alcoholic beverages. During the party, Murphy and Katy Elizabeth Gaire, Von Batten’s roommate, entered the bathroom for a private conversation.
“When Ms. Murphy told Ms. Gaire that she and Mr. Okeke were involved in a romantic relationship, Ms. Gaire said, ‘now that I know that, you need to know that within the past two weeks since I’ve moved in . . . I’ve slept with [Mr. Okeke] four or five times,'” the court document reads.
Murphy became emotional, crying and yelling. Von Batten entered the bathroom and the two got into a heated argument. He asked her to leave his house.
The court said Von Batten lunged at Murphy, who was sitting on the edge of the bathtub, causing her to fall. She ran into his bedroom.
“Inside the bedroom, Mr. Okeke dragged Ms. Murphy by her legs and arms; repeatedly hit her in the face (including her eye); kicked her in her legs and on her buttocks; and pushed her up against the wall,” the Court of Appeals stated.
“While he was assaulting her, Mr. Okeke repeatedly asked her to leave. The attack left Ms. Murphy with a black eye, a swollen face, bruises extending from her lip down to the base of her neck as well as on the side of her face and arms, and cuts to the inside of her mouth.”
After Von Batten left the bedroom, Murphy locked the door and called 911. Fearing further assault, she climbed through the bedroom window onto the outside ledge of the first-floor apartment. Neighbours saw her and helped her down. She later received treatment at George Washington University Hospital.
The Appeal
Murphy had filed an appeal against a civil protection order (CPO) issued against her for failing to leave Von Batten’s apartment after he asked her to. A CPO is a restraining order directing one person to stay away from another.
She argued the CPO was improper “because unlawful entry is a crime against property, not against a person and, therefore, does not satisfy the statutory requirement for an intrafamily offense.”
In its judgment delivered on July 3, 2008, the US appellate court — comprising Anna Blackburne-Rigsby, Stephen Glickman, and John Ferren — overturned the lower court’s decision to issue the CPO against Murphy and ordered the lower court to vacate the order.
The Man With Many Names
Von Batten’s identity has raised questions since the records surfaced.
On his LinkedIn profile, his full name is listed as “Karl-Marx Edward Ikemefuna William George Okeke-Von Batten” — a combination of British, German/Austrian, and Nigerian names. “Von” is a common prefix for surnames linked to nobility in Germany and Austria, “Ikemefuna Okeke” suggests south-east Nigerian roots, and “Batten” is of British origin.
In the court documents, however, he was identified as “Karl M.E. Okeke” — the initials standing for Marx and Edward — indicating he later changed his surname to “Von Batten.”
In April 2026, Atiku hired Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C., a Washington-based lobbying firm founded by Von Batten, to protect and strengthen his “reputational standing” in the United States.
A Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) filing with the US Department of Justice showed the lobbying contract was worth $1,200,000 annually.
Since the contract was signed, Von Batten’s background and records have come under intense scrutiny.
Recently, the lobbying firm deleted an X post announcing the purported appointment of Von Batten to a White House position. According to the firm, US President Donald Trump appointed Von Batten to serve as a commissioner on a White House presidential commission. There has been no official communication from the White House confirming or denying the purported appointment.
