UEFA has fined Tottenham Hotspur and handed the club a suspended ban on selling away tickets after three supporters made Nazi salutes towards Eintracht Frankfurt fans.
The incident took place during a Champions League tie at Deutsche Bank Park on 28 January. Spurs won the match 2-0.
European football’s governing body said it imposed the sanction for “the racist and/or discriminatory behaviour of its supporters”. The away ticket ban has been suspended for a probationary period of one year.
Tottenham were fined £26,000, equivalent to 30,000 euros. A further £1,966, or 2,250 euros, was issued for objects thrown by supporters.
Spurs moved quickly to condemn those involved.
“The conduct of a small number of fans was utterly abhorrent,” the club said.
“We can confirm that all three individuals found to be making Nazi salutes towards Eintracht Frankfurt fans have been identified and have received indefinite bans under the club’s sanctions and banning policy.
“The club stands firmly against all forms of discrimination and has therefore taken the strongest possible action. The disgusting behaviour of a minority of so-called fans on the night is in no way reflective of the values of our club and its supporters.”
The case follows a separate controversy in Spain, where Real Madrid opened an investigation after a supporter allegedly performed a Nazi salute before their Champions League victory against Benfica.
Meanwhile, two men have been charged after crowd trouble during Nottingham Forest’s Europa League home fixture against Fenerbahçe.
Police arrested three people following incidents that included flares being thrown from the away end, forcing a first-half stoppage.
Ender Celik, 37, of Chatsworth Road, Hackney, London, has been charged with throwing a missile at an area adjacent to a football pitch.
Dale Morgan, 38, of Bransdale Road, Nottingham, was charged with going on to a playing area at a football match.
Nottinghamshire Police said Celik was bailed with conditions ahead of an appearance at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 17 March. Morgan was also bailed with conditions and will appear at the same court on the same date in a separate hearing.
Officers added that no further action was taken against a man arrested on suspicion of assaulting a steward.
A section of seating in the away end at the City Ground was found damaged after the match.
Forest lost the Europa League play-off 2-1 on the night but progressed 4-2 on aggregate.
