Charlie Kirk, the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of the conservative youth organisation Turning Point USA, has died after being shot during an event at a Utah college. He was 31 years old.
The news of Kirk’s death was announced by former United States President Donald Trump in a post on his Truth Social platform. “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead,” Trump wrote.
A video circulating widely on social media showed Kirk speaking to a large outdoor audience when a loud crack, believed to be a gunshot, rang out. He appeared to touch his neck before collapsing from his chair, which immediately sent the crowd running in panic. Kirk was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, and although Trump later announced his passing, local authorities and hospital officials have not yet provided confirmation.
Orem Mayor David Young said the shooter remains at large, although authorities are not currently urging residents to shelter in place. A person who was initially detained after the incident was later released and confirmed not to be connected to the attack. According to a spokesperson for Utah Valley University, the investigation remains ongoing, and no suspect has been identified at this time.
Federal law enforcement agencies have joined the case, with FBI Director Kash Patel stating that agents were quickly deployed to the scene. He expressed condolences to Kirk’s family and all those affected, describing the incident as tragic.
Kirk had been invited to the Utah Valley University campus for a debate organised by Turning Point USA. His appearance generated significant controversy, with nearly 1,000 students and faculty members signing an online petition urging the school to cancel his participation. The university defended its decision to host him, citing constitutional rights and its commitment to free speech and open dialogue.
Ironically, just before the shooting, Kirk had been answering questions about gun violence and mass shootings. When asked about the number of transgender Americans who had been mass shooters in the past decade, he responded, “Too many.” The audience member then asked him about the overall number of mass shootings, and Kirk replied, “Counting or not counting gang violence?” Immediately after this exchange, the single fatal shot rang out.
Former Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz, who was present at the event, said he heard one gunshot and saw Kirk collapse. He noted that while there was a police presence and some security at the venue, it was not nearly sufficient given the heated opposition surrounding the event. “Utah is one of the safest places on the planet, and so we just don’t have these types of things,” Chaffetz said, visibly shaken.
Charlie Kirk rose to national prominence after founding Turning Point USA in 2012 at the age of 18 with Tea Party activist William Montgomery. The organisation initially struggled but later gained traction by aggressively promoting low taxes, limited government, and conservative values on college campuses. Kirk’s confrontational style and willingness to challenge liberal academic environments quickly earned him media attention and financial support from influential conservative donors.
By 2016, Turning Point USA had become one of the strongest youth-based groups backing Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. Kirk himself worked closely with Donald Trump Jr. during the election, and his relationship with the Trump family propelled him further into the spotlight. He became a regular figure on cable television, often wading into cultural battles and vigorously defending Trump’s agenda. The former president and his son regularly attended Turning Point conferences and hailed Kirk as one of the leading voices of the conservative movement.
The shooting has once again drawn attention to the rising wave of political violence across the United States. In recent months, there have been several politically motivated attacks, including the killing of a Minnesota state legislator and her husband in June, a firebombing at a Colorado rally supporting Israeli hostages in Gaza, and an arson attack on the Pennsylvania governor’s residence earlier this year.
Trump, in his Truth Social post, also directed that American flags be flown at half-staff nationwide until Sunday evening as a mark of respect. “In honour of Charlie Kirk, a truly Great American Patriot, I am ordering all American Flags throughout the United States lowered to Half Mast until Sunday evening at 6 PM,” he wrote.
Charlie Kirk’s death brings a shocking and violent end to the career of a man who reshaped conservative youth activism over the past decade and became one of the most visible and influential figures in American politics.
