Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have repelled a coordinated attack by ISWAP terrorists on a Forward Operating Base in Mandaragirau, Borno State, killing several insurgents and recovering weapons.
The military disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday by the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force (North East), Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba.
According to the statement, the attack occurred in the early hours of March 28, 2026, when terrorists attempted to overrun the FOB in Sector 2 but were met with strong resistance from troops.
The military said the soldiers engaged the attackers using coordinated ambush tactics and a defensive offensive strategy, forcing the insurgents to retreat in disarray, while the Air Component provided close air support and intelligence surveillance to enhance precision strikes.
It added that follow up operations along the terrorists’ escape routes led to further casualties among the fleeing fighters.
“About 38 terrorists were neutralised, with eight bodies recovered within the immediate area of engagement, while local intelligence indicates that over 30 additional bodies were sighted along the Garin Mallum to Garin Gajere axis extending into the Timbuktu Triangle,” the statement said.
Troops also recovered seven AK-47 rifles, eight magazines, four rocket propelled grenade bombs, and assorted ammunition from the scene.
The military noted that there were no fatalities among the troops, although one Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle was hit by rocket fire, with injured personnel receiving prompt medical attention and stabilisation.
It added that the operation has boosted morale among local communities, who have expressed relief over the continued military pressure on terrorist groups in the region.
The statement further disclosed that clearance and exploitation operations are ongoing along the Garin Mallum and Garin Gajere axis to recover additional bodies and consolidate the gains recorded.
