Troops of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have arrested a suspected gunrunner and recovered six PKT machine guns during an intelligence-led operation in Taraba State.
The operation, which took place on 12 February 2026 in Ibi Local Government Area, followed credible intelligence that prompted personnel from the Forward Operating Base in Wukari to take immediate action.
The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Abubakar Ibrahim, a native of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area in Plateau State, was apprehended during the raid.
A search conducted at the scene led to the recovery of six PKT machine guns, two rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and the sum of โฆ170,000. Security operatives also seized a Peugeot 504 vehicle, a mobile phone, and other personal effects, including bottles of perfume and containers of Vaseline.
The suspect is currently in custody and is assisting with investigations.
In a statement, the Commander of 6 Brigade, Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Micheal Akaliro, commended the troops for their professionalism and swift response.
He noted that the operation dealt a significant blow to the illegal arms trade and reinforced ongoing efforts to curb insecurity in the region.
โThis successful interception has once again denied criminal elements the opportunity to proliferate illegal weapons within the state, thereby contributing significantly to ongoing efforts to curb insecurity and enhance public safety,โ he said.
The Commander also appreciated the cooperation of local residents who provided timely and credible intelligence that supported the operation.
He urged members of the public to remain security conscious and continue to assist security agencies with actionable information.
โThe Brigade remains resolute in its mandate to protect lives and property, and to restore lasting peace and stability across Taraba State,โ Brigadier General Akaliro added.
