A German tourist has been killed and a pilot seriously injured following a light aircraft crash near Aus Settlement in southern Namibiaโs Kharas Region.
Authorities confirmed that the victim, identified as 51-year-old Carmen Spetzinger, died at the scene of the incident, which occurred during the ill-fated flight. The information was disclosed to Namibiaโs national broadcaster, NBC, on Monday.
The pilot, 60-year-old German national Saneke Bernhard, survived the crash but sustained serious injuries. He was airlifted by Medical Rescue Africa from the coastal town of Luderitz to a private hospital in the capital, Windhoek, where he is currently in stable condition.
According to Nicodemus Mbango, head of the Kharas Police Crime Investigations Unit, preliminary findings suggest that the aircraft was flying at a low altitude when it struck electrical cables, resulting in the crash.
Mbango said the wreckage has been secured under police guard as investigations continue to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Authorities have also confirmed that the next of kin of the deceased have been notified.
The incident adds to concerns over aviation safety in the region, particularly involving light aircraft frequently used for tourism activities across Namibiaโs vast landscapes.
