President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated that all political appointees in his administration who intend to run for elective offices in the 2027 general elections must resign their current positions on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive was made public on Tuesday in a statement issued by Dewan Goshit, the Head of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).
According to the statement, the resignation is compulsory for appointees wishing to contest for any elective position, as the administration seeks to uphold the principles of fairness and integrity in the electoral process.
The move aims to prevent a conflict of interest and ensure that aspirants do not leverage their current governmental positions or public resources for campaign purposes. It also seeks to create a level playing field for all candidates ahead of the 2027 polls.
The OSGF has therefore called on all affected appointees to comply with the directive immediately, warning that failure to resign by the stipulated deadline would be considered a forfeiture of their political aspirations.
More details will be provided as the situation develops.
