Hours after US President Donald Trump announced the successful elimination of a senior Islamic State leader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially commended the joint counterterrorism operation carried out by Nigerian and American forces.
In a Statehouse statement issued and personally signed on Saturday, President Tinubu confirmed that the targeted strike killed Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki, also known as Abu-Mainok, along with several of his lieutenants at his compound in the Lake Chad Basin.
The operation, described as “daring” by the Nigerian leader, represents one of the most significant counterterrorism collaborations between both nations in recent years.
“We have recorded a significant example of effective collaboration in the fight against terrorism,” Tinubu said, praising the professionalism and courage of personnel on both sides.
The President extended “sincere gratitude” to President Trump for his leadership and unwavering support, adding that Nigeria looks forward to “more decisive strikes against all terrorist enclaves across the nation.”
Trump had earlier announced the operation’s success from Washington, commending the Tinubu-led administration for its determination and strategic cooperation.
Early assessments indicate Al-Manuki, a high-value target long sought by international security services, was neutralized alongside key members of his network.
The development marks a major blow to ISIS operations in the Lake Chad region and signals a deepening of Nigeria-US security ties
