Socialite and businessman Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, has revealed that President Bola Tinubu does not fully trust him due to his support for Labour Party candidate Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential election.
The celebrity bartender and Imo State Coordinator of the Pro-Tinubu City Boys Movement made the disclosure during a livestream with popular streamer Peller.
In a video that circulated widely on Wednesday, Cubana Chief Priest spoke candidly about what he described as lingering suspicion from the presidency, linked to both his ethnic background and his previous political allegiance.
“President Bola Tinubu no really trust me as an Igbo man that I am. He look me with one eye because he believes that this one that worked for Peter Obi before at the last election,” Chief Priest stated.
Why he dumped Obi for Tinubu
Asked why he abandoned Peter Obi after passionately campaigning for him in 2023, Cubana Chief Priest offered a blunt explanation rooted in political pragmatism.
“Because I don’t want to lose again,” he said. “Because they say first fool no be fool, na the second fool be proper fool.”
He further dismissed Obi’s chances in the 2027 presidential election, describing the former Anambra State governor as “not serious” and asserting that only “the serious people will win.”
Backlash and accusations of opportunism
The comments have sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many critics accusing Cubana Chief Priest of political opportunism and questioning his loyalty to the Igbo cause.
Others, however, viewed his remarks as a pragmatic reflection of Nigeria’s winner-takes-all political landscape.
Chief Priest was notably vocal in his support for Obi and the Labour Party ahead of the 2023 polls. Since then, he has realigned himself with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Tinubu.
He recently purchased an APC primary form to contest for a House of Representatives seat but controversially pulled out on the morning of the election last Saturday.
