…Says re-election proves democracy flourishing under APC
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Governor Ademola Adeleke on his re-election in Saturday’s Osun State governorship election, describing the victory as a fitting assurance that democracy will continue to flourish in Nigeria under the All Progressives Congress administration.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President said he called Governor Adeleke earlier today to congratulate him on his election victory.
“His victory once again confirmed the confidence the people of Osun State have in him,” President Tinubu said.
The President urged the re-elected governor to unite the people of Osun State and rally them for growth, stability, and social and economic progress, regardless of the political choices they made at the election.
President Tinubu also saluted the courage and discipline displayed by other contestants in the election, noting that their participation deepened and enriched Nigeria’s democratic culture.
“The outcome of the election reflects the will of the people and is a fitting assurance that democracy will continue to flourish in our land,” he stated.
The President commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies for conducting a peaceful and transparent election that produced a clear winner.
Saturday’s governorship election was keenly contested, with Governor Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) seeking a second term in office. The All Progressives Congress (APC) fielded Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji as its candidate, with Benjamin Adereti as his running mate .
Observers from the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) were deployed across all 30 Local Government Areas of the state to monitor the electoral process from voting to counting and collation, tracking violence, vote buying, misinformation, and other emerging issues .
The election was widely seen as an important test of Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections . Concerns around political violence had intensified ahead of the polls, with CJID’s Conflict Tracker recording 34 election-related violent incidents and 18 deaths across the state since May 2026, with incidents increasingly concentrated around Ilesa, Osogbo, Oriade, and other identified flashpoints .
On election day, voting was completed in most monitored locations without widespread violence or evidence of systemic BVAS failure. However, possible voter inducement emerged as the most recurrent integrity concern, reported across 14 of the 25 Local Government Areas covered by the late-afternoon assessment . Emerging reports of interference with journalists, observers, and polling agents also put electoral integrity under renewed scrutiny .
