Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, is set to be formally received into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in January 2026, the state chapter of the party has announced.
The confirmation was made by the Taraba State APC Chairman, Ibrahim Tukur, during a press conference in Jalingo on Sunday.
This follows the governor’s earlier decision to postpone a planned defection ceremony from November 19, a move he attributed to the need for national solidarity following the kidnapping of students in Kebbi State.
Chairman Tukur explained that the official public reception has now been rescheduled primarily due to the crowded festive calendar in December.
“December is already jam-packed with activities. We don’t want to drag people across the state when families are preparing for Christmas and the New Year,” Tukur stated.
He emphasized that Governor Kefas has already fulfilled all necessary party entry requirements at the grassroots level.
“The governor wrote to his ward executives, and they have duly received him. As far as party records are concerned, Governor Kefas is now a bona fide member of the APC,” Tukur declared.
The defection appears to be part of a broader political realignment within the state. Tukur revealed that 15 members of the Taraba State House of Assembly and the entire State Executive Council have also joined the APC alongside the governor.
“What you are seeing is a natural realignment. Key stakeholders around the governor have joined him, and more are coming. There is absolutely no cause for alarm,” he added.
The party leadership has unanimously agreed on the new timeline. “We have met as a party and agreed that January is the best time. Once a specific date is agreed upon, we will communicate it to the public,” Tukur concluded.
