Former governor of Sokoto State and Senator representing Sokoto South Senatorial District, Aminu Tambuwal, who was taken into custody by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was yesterday granted administrative bail.
Spear News reports that Tambuwal was detained on Monday by operatives of the anti-graft agency in connection with suspicious withdrawal of N189 billion.
The alleged financial misconduct was perpetuated when Tambuwal was governor of Sokoto State for eight years.
He was arrested and detained in the facility of the EFCC on Monday 11th August 2025 at about 11:16am and was granted administrative bail lately on Tuesday the following day.
Contrary to reports in some quarters that he was picked up by operatives of the EFCC, Tambuwal honoured an invitation and personally went to the EFCC headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, where he was interrogated for money laundering.
An EFCC operative who craved not to be named confirmed the administrative bail, saying Tambuwal has met the requirements for his release.
EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, also confirmed the development on Tuesday night but declined to give further details.
The investigation is ongoing, and while no formal charges have yet been filed in court, the case is expected to remain in public focus given Tambuwalโs prominence in Nigerian politics.
His arrest has been widely condemned by the opposition ADC describing as political witch hunt. A statement by the spokesperson of the party, Bolaji Abdullahi condemned his detention, saying it was selective prosecution of opposition to silence them.
The commission has however dismissed the allegation and warned politicians to concentrate on their partisan politics and allow them do their job.
