The Sokoto State Government has ordered the immediate suspension of all fee collections in public secondary schools across the state.
The directive was issued on Wednesday by the State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Professor Ladan Ala.
This move follows the establishment of a committee to review numerous concerns raised about various levies and charges. The suspension will remain in effect pending the outcome of the committee’s review and its subsequent recommendations.
In a statement signed by the Ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Mohammad Iya, Professor Ala outlined a comprehensive list of fees that are now temporarily banned. Principals are instructed not to collect the following:
ยท Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) levy
ยท Admission fees
ยท Testimonial fees
ยท Statement of result fees
ยท MSS (Mutual Social Support) fees
ยท Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) statement of result/certificate fees
ยท Answer sheet fees
ยท Screening form fees
ยท Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) fees
ยท NECO/NABTEB/NBAIS certificate fees
The commissioner issued a stern warning to all school principals to ensure strict compliance.
โAll principals are hereby advised to comply strictly with this directive,โ the statement read. โAny violation will attract immediate administrative action.โ
This policy is expected to provide financial relief to parents and guardians as the government works to standardize and possibly overhaul the fee structure in the state’s public secondary education system.
