The Senate on Wednesday ordered an investigation into renewed attacks in the Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The lawmakers also directed immediate provision of relief materials for displaced residents following violent assaults on communities, including Kwa, Gyakan, Rigange, Waduku and Tchobo, by gunmen reportedly riding motorcycles.
The resolution followed a motion by Sen. Binos Yaroe (Adamawa South), who raised concerns over terror unleashed on defenceless residents in the affected communities.
Mr Yaroe expressed worry that the attacks occurred despite the dusk-to-dawn curfew and the presence of security agents deployed to maintain peace in the affected areas.
Supporting the motion, Senator Amos Yohanna (Adamawa North) described the prolonged crisis as tragic, noting that violence had persisted in spite of efforts to restore peace.
”I am fully aware of the state government’s efforts to restore peace, but the crisis has refused to disappear over the years,” Mr Yohanna said.
He urged the National Assembly to collaborate with the Adamawa State government in sustaining peace initiatives, while appealing to security agencies to intensify interventions.
”They have been doing a lot in that area. We want to encourage them and urge them to do more,” he added.
The Senate, in its resolution, mandated its Committee on National Security and Intelligence to investigate the security situation and recommend lasting solutions to end the conflict.
The lawmakers also directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide emergency relief materials for displaced persons.
The lawmakers thereafter observed a one-minute silence for victims.
