Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga has taken a swipe at Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, following reports that the former Anambra governor was forced to slow down after a gruelling stretch of campaign engagements left him exhausted.
Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, made light of the situation in a brief post on X on Tuesday, suggesting Obi had discovered he was only human after all — and using the moment to take a jab at his presidential bid.
“So, Saint Peter Obi is not a Superman after all. He can fall ill like all mortals,” Onanuga wrote.
“I wish him a quick recovery so he can rejoin what looks like another doomed presidential campaign.”
The taunt came shortly after the NDC campaign council moved to reassure supporters about Obi’s condition. Sam Omale, the council’s deputy spokesperson, told Channels Television’s The Morning Brief that the candidate had been advised to rest following a punishing schedule of intercity travel and back-to-back engagements.
Omale’s comments followed concerns sparked by Obi’s recent rally in Enugu, after which he reportedly told supporters he would be taking a break.
Despite the fatigue, Omale insisted the NDC flagbearer remained in good health and that the development would not disrupt his campaign activities.
But the party’s national publicity secretary, Osa Director, appeared out of the loop when approached for comment, saying he was unaware that Obi had suffered exhaustion from campaign engagements.
