The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged Nigerian voters to draw a direct lesson from the sweeping Democratic victories in Tuesday’s United States midterm elections, saying that the ballot box remains the ultimate weapon for citizens to punish arrogant and failing governments.
In a press statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the American outcome, in which Democrats decisively captured both the House of Representatives and the Senate, demonstrated that power ultimately resides with the people and not with a ruling party that has lost touch with ordinary citizens.
“Americans have shown that when politicians become arrogant, when policies punish ordinary people, and when those in power mistake popularity for a permanent licence to govern, the ballot box remains the ultimate instrument of accountability. No leader is bigger than the people, and no political party is entitled to power forever”, the ADC said.
Spear News Nigeria reports that projections by major U.S. networks and reporting by the Associated Press, Democrats secured control of both chambers of Congress in a stunning repudiation of President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
The results saw Democrats flip Senate seats in traditionally Republican strongholds including Texas, where James Talarico defeated Trump-backed Ken Paxton; Kansas, where Adam Hamilton won a seat the party had not held since 1932; and South Carolina, where Annie Andrews upset Darline Graham.
In Maine, Democrat Troy Jackson unseated long-serving Republican Senator Susan Collins, while Sherrod Brown reclaimed a Senate seat in Ohio. The Democratic wave was fueled by voter anger over high living costs, the economic fallout of the Iran war, and concerns over government corruption.
The ADC contrasted that accountability with the Nigerian situation, saying Nigerians have endured years of unprecedented economic hardship, worsening insecurity and disappearing opportunities under the Tinubu-led APC government.
“We cannot continue to complain about the cost of living while voting for a President who has made life unaffordable. We cannot demand security while rewarding failure. History beckons in 2027. Our voters’ cards must become instruments of change, not souvenirs of citizenship”, the party said.
The ADC presented itself as the clear alternative, urging Nigerians to turn out massively in 2027 and vote for their own interests rather than political loyalties or personality cults.
“If Americans can use their votes to demand better, Nigerians can do the same. In 2027, let our votes speak louder than the APC-induced suffering,” the statement said, while reiterating the party’s platform to “Make Nigeria Affordable Again. Make Nigeria Safe Again. Give Nigerians Jobs Again.”
