The House of Representatives ad hoc committee investigating the recurring killings in Plateau State has concluded its work and is set to submit its findings to President Bola Tinubu.
The report is expected to recommend decisive action to end the protracted bloodshed in the region.
This was disclosed in Abuja by the committee chairman, Wale Ahmed, during a visit to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda. Ahmed stated that the panel was rounding off its engagements with critical stakeholders and would soon present its findings. “At the end of our consultations, a comprehensive report will be submitted to the House and to Mr President, who as Commander-in-Chief, has shown great interest in achieving lasting peace in Plateau State and the entire country,” he said.
The committee’s investigation has been extensive, involving meetings with over 300 individuals and organisations. These have included former Governor Joshua Dariye, traditional rulers, civil society groups, opinion leaders, and security agencies. The panel also received numerous memoranda, including one from the immediate past Commander of Operation Safe Haven, General Rogers, who appeared to share his insights.
Ahmed explained that the submissions from these stakeholders have been crucial in identifying the major drivers of the violence and potential pathways to peace. These findings will form the core of the final report presented to the President.
Meanwhile, Prof. Yilwatda commended the intervention of the House of Representatives, noting the severe impact the persistent crisis has had on the state. “We have lost countless lives and seen businesses shut down. Many now see Plateau as unsafe,” he said, stressing the urgency of government intervention to restore normalcy and the state’s damaged reputation as a destination for tourism and investment.
The House initially set up the investigation panel on March 31, 2024, following a motion of urgent national importance sponsored by lawmakers Ishaya Lalu and Dalyop Chollom. The motion was adopted during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, leading to the comprehensive probe now reaching its conclusion.
