Ibadan Rally Expected To Signal Major Political Realignment
Strong indications have emerged that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, may formally throw his hat into the ring for the 2027 presidential race during a planned mega political gathering scheduled to hold in Ibadan on May 14.
The event, which is being coordinated under the banner of “Unity Mega Rally Ibadan 2026,” is already attracting attention across the country amid growing reports that it could also produce a fresh political coalition ahead of the next general elections.
Multiple party insiders familiar with ongoing consultations disclosed that discussions have intensified between influential figures within the Peoples Democratic Party and the Allied Peoples’ Movement over a possible working alliance designed to reshape opposition politics before 2027.
Though details of the arrangement remain closely guarded, sources said the proposed alliance is aimed at creating a broader platform capable of accommodating dissatisfied political blocs and strengthening emerging forces within the opposition.
In recent weeks, mobilisation efforts across Oyo State have reportedly increased, with support groups, youth coordinators, and local political structures actively engaging residents ahead of the rally expected to hold at the iconic Mapo Hall.
Political observers believe the choice of venue carries symbolic weight, given the historical role of Mapo Hall in major political movements within the South-West.
A source involved in the consultations described the coming event as “far bigger than a campaign declaration,” adding that several political stakeholders from across the country are expected to attend.
“There is a growing belief among many political actors that the opposition needs a fresh direction and a stronger unifying force going into 2027,” the source said.
Although Governor Seyi Makinde has yet to officially confirm his presidential ambition publicly, the increasing political activities around his camp have continued to fuel speculations that preparations for a national project may already be underway.
The planned rally is expected to attract party loyalists, traditional leaders, youth groups, and prominent political figures from different regions of the country as conversations around the 2027 presidential election continue to gather momentum.
